Comments: Farnham is sometime noted as "Old Rappahannock".

John Canterbury came to Virginia in November 1685 on the ship "Swallow" from Bristol, England. It was the passenger roster that listed his former home as Litton, England. He settled in North Farnham, a small settlement near the Rappahannock River in Old Rappahannock County, later renamed Richmond County. He married Ruth Williams who was the daughter of Roger and Joane Jen Firth of Farnham. About 1720 daughter Elizabeth married John Kincheloe and son John Jr. married Elizabeth Smith at the North Farnham Parish. A short time later Richmond County Order Book 9 page 50 states that the younger John Canterbury and John Kincheloe are co-administrators responsible for inventorying the elder John Canterbury's estate which was inherited by Ruth. Between 1733 and 1737 the familys migrated north up ther Potomac Path and the Kings Highway to a small settlement near the banks of the Occoquan River in newly formed Prince William County. This settlement would later be named Woodbridge. Ruth's Will was recorded at the Fairfax County Courthouse in nearby Fairfax County in 1750.
